| Breaking News | | Sunday, August 10th, 1997: McLeverty Spins Shutout Against Calgary "It was just one of those games, when everything went right. I threw a lot of strikes," B.J. McLeverty said. "And the pitches they did get to hit, they didn't do anything with them."
The Reddick Rattlers pitcher really got it done in his 3-0 shutout victory over the Calgary Firebirds, shutting them down on 2 hits. McLeverty issued 1 walk and had 9 strikeouts.
On his stats sheet this season McLeverty shows a 8-2 record, 17 starts, 111.1 innings, 106 strikeouts and a 2.75 ERA. | | Thursday, August 7th, 1997: Who Says Nobody's Perfect? Many times a perfect game happens only in dreams or in backyard baseball games where you're the only player. When it magically happens in real life, like it did on this August day at Big Dog Stadium, it's a very special occasion.
Thunder Bay pitcher Rick Gillespie retired all 27 batters today, defeating Calgary 3-0 in a once-in-a-lifetime perfect game. He surrendered no hits, walked none, struck out 2 and permitted no one to get on base.
Sitting in the clubhouse after the game, speaking to reporters Gillespie said, "Many times as a kid, I imagined pitching a perfect game, but it was only a fairy tale. I didn't really ever expect to pitch one. It's a special experience and I don't want to demean it, but I've had better stuff than I had today and lost games. It all just fell into place in this game. They hit 'em where we were and we caught 'em."
In the 1997 season Gillespie has recorded a 3-4 mark. In 11 starts he has fanned 27 batters in 58.1 innings with a 4.47 ERA. | | Tuesday, August 5th, 1997: Calgary Comes up Empty Against Vaughan Kelly Vaughan had the Calgary Firebirds dancing to his tune today with a sparkling 5-0 shutout performance for the Thunder Bay Huskies. He gave up 3 hits and collected no walks and 4 strikeouts.
Calgary hitters were bewildered throughout the game by his delivery.
The opposing manager said, "When you face a guy who hides the ball like he does, it takes a couple of at-bats to try to find his release point. We just never figured him out."
This year Vaughan has worked 115.2 innings with 97 strikeouts en route to a 4-4 record and a 3.42 ERA. | | | Injuries | | Player | Injury | Out for... | Disabled List Status | | P Jesse Beck | ruptured tricep tendon | 5 months | Not on DL | | C Jeremy Leyva | torn posterior cruciate ligament | 2-3 months | Not on DL | | | Team Information | | Record overall | 31-99, .238 PCT | | Position in Division | 5th, 53.0 GB | | Record at home | 14-51, .215 PCT | | Record on the road | 17-48, .262 PCT | | Record in X-inning games | 0-7, .000 PCT | | Record in one-run games | 13-19, .406 PCT | | Record versus LHP | 5-21, .192 PCT | | Record versus RHP | 26-78, .250 PCT | | Record last 10 games | 4-6, .400 PCT | | Record in April | 12-16, .429 PCT | | Record in May | 5-24, .172 PCT | | Record in June | 3-23, .115 PCT | | Record in July | 5-23, .179 PCT | | Record in August | 6-13, .316 PCT |
