When Nick Gordon takes the mound, a Victoria victory is usually the result. At least that's the way it was in May.
He excelled with a 5-0 mark and a 1.54 ERA in 5 starts, tossed 35 innings, fanned 27 and held opposing batters to a .267 average.
That's why the Monarchs starter was honored today as the Pitcher of the Month by the Cooperstown League.
This year Gordon has a 11-5 record with a 3.65 ERA in 20 starts.

 | Monday, June 30th, 1997: CLA Player of the Week Goes to Watkins of Victoria
With some great hand-eye coordination and a sweet, compact swing, Victoria Monarchs catcher Austin Watkins took the Cooperstown League by storm this past week to take the latest Player of the Week honors.
"The ball was looking like a beach ball all week," a happy Watkins said to SION reporters. "When it's that big, it doesn't matter where they throw it -- I can hit it anywhere."
The 20-year-old catcher hit .467 (14-30) last week with no home runs, 8 RBIs and 9 runs scored.
Year-to-date in 81 games Watkins has compiled a .356 batting average with 117 hits and 2 home runs. He has also scored 41 times and knocked in 63 runs.

 | Sunday, June 1st, 1997: Lowe May's Best Hurler in CLA
Brit Lowe of the Monarchs pretty much bewildered opposing batters in May and was honored as the Cooperstown League Pitcher of the Month earlier today.
The Victoria starter sparkled last month with a 5-0 record and 1.91 ERA. He made 7 starts, tossed 47 innings and had 32 strikeouts.
In 13 starts this season Lowe has compiled a 8-2 record and a 2.84 ERA.
