| Breaking News | | Thursday, June 11th, 1998: Carpenter Hurls Aardvarks to Shutout Victory Bill Carpenter of the Ann Arbor Aardvarks was masterful today, pitching a 5-hit 3-0 shutout against the Union Bridge Owls and giving his bullpen a rest by going the distance.
According to his manager, "He had command of every ball and every pitch... great location, too." Carpenter had 3 strikeouts and issued 2 walks in an impressive outing.
This year Carpenter has a 4-6 mark in 15 starts with a 4.05 ERA. He has given up 95 hits in 97.2 innings, struck out 27 and issued 34 walks. Opposing clubs have compiled a .249 batting average against him. | | Monday, June 8th, 1998: Higginsville's Berry Shuts Out Aardvarks It was a great game for Pat Berry of the Higginsville Hillbillies. The 20-year-old hurler blanked the Ann Arbor Aardvarks 8-0, stopping them on 1 hit.
Berry has posted a 10-1 record in 1998 with a 2.61 ERA. To the press after the ballgame he modestly said, "Guys, it's just one game in a long season. I hit it hard and found some holes today. 5 hits in 6 tries. But my hits are not the big thing in the game. The victory is the important thing. That's the story."
At the end of the game Irwin had collected 5 hits in 6 at-bats and a small mention in the record book. He was happy. He had a big day with the bat. And the Aardvarks had won.
The beat writers were happy, too. They had their big story -- they could write about his big day with the bat.
M. Irwin singled in the 1st, doubled in the 4th, flied out in the 5th, singled in the 7th, singled in the 8th and hit a two-run single in the 9th.
To date this season Irwin is hitting .270 with no home runs. | | | Injuries | | Player | Injury | Out for... | Disabled List Status | | P Merrill McMahon | dislocated elbow | 4 days | Not on DL | | | Team Information | | Record overall | 28-53, .346 PCT | | Position in Division | 5th, 27.0 GB | | Record at home | 14-25, .359 PCT | | Record on the road | 14-28, .333 PCT | | Record in X-inning games | 2-7, .222 PCT | | Record in one-run games | 8-16, .333 PCT | | Record versus LHP | 6-6, .500 PCT | | Record versus RHP | 22-47, .319 PCT | | Record last 10 games | 5-5, .500 PCT | | Record in April | 7-21, .250 PCT | | Record in May | 14-15, .483 PCT | | Record in June | 7-17, .292 PCT |
