Monday, June 29th, 1998: Super Swinger Snags CLAA Player of the Week
Like a battering ram, Charles Phillips hit the baseball with brutal efficiency last week, gaining himself the Cooperstown League Player of the Week title for that stretch.

The Lansing Lugnuts shortstop rapped out a .522 average with 12 hits in 23 at-bats, no home runs, 4 runs batted in and 4 runs scored.

Phillips is hitting at a .350 mark this season. His stats show no home runs, 15 RBIs and 26 runs scored. He has played 49 games for the Lugnuts.
Monday, June 22nd, 1998: Super Week for Lansing's Gibson!
24-year-old Bennie Gibson made a few Lansing headlines during this past week as the rookie catcher proved he could compete at the plate with his high-school idols. He captured the attention of fans, journalists and Cooperstown League officials last week and today took home Player of the Week honors for his effort.

He cracked 10 hits in 21 at-bats to put up a .476 average. Gibson collected 1 home run, 6 RBIs and scored 6 runs.

Gibson is hitting .292 so far this season with 29 RBIs and 30 runs scored. He has 54 hits including 2 home runs, 20 walks and .352 OBP.
Wednesday, June 17th, 1998: League Suspends Lansing's Sanders
The Lansing Lugnuts were not very happy with the home plate umpire in today's loss to Tahoma at Ballpark of Grand Island. One in particular -- Josh Sanders. Upon being called out on strikes, the Lugnuts shortstop gave the ump quite an earful. For that, the man in blue gave him the thumb and sent him to an early shower.

But the disgruntled Sanders lingered on the field for another five minutes berating the umpire. Finally his manager got him off the field and into the clubhouse.

But it got worse after the game, when Sanders told reporters, "He was blind today. They played 'Three Blind Mice' for him. If he doesn't know the words to the song, I'm sure we can get it in braille, so he can follow along."

For all of his escapades and after-the-game oration, the league office suspended Sanders for 2 games.

This season Sanders is batting .194 with no home runs.
