Monday, June 29th, 1998: Big Bat Bags HLAA Best Player Award
It was an exceptional week for Gerald Hutchins of the Truckee Chiefs.

First he beat the devil out of the ball, hitting .586 and as you would expect, he was voted the Player of the Week in the Hoboken League. Last week Hutchins went 17-29, notched 2 home runs and 11 RBIs and scored 8 runs. All in all, a very good week for him.

This season Hutchins is hitting .438 with 39 hits, 3 home runs, 29 RBIs, scored 20 runs and played in 25 games.
Saturday, June 27th, 1998: 5-Hit Blitz by Truckee's Hutchins
After the Truckee 9-4 victory over Martins Ferry and his 5-hit day right fielder Gerald Hutchins told BNN beat writers, "It really doesn't matter whether it's sandlot ball, high school or college ball, two hits in a game is very good... three or four hits even better... 5 or more are out of sight... and if it is in pro ball... it is really something special. It will get you in the record books."

The 19-year-old player gained that distinction today at Butte Grounds with a spectacular 5 for 6 game against the Martins Ferry Purple Riders.

The skipper of the Chiefs spoke glowingly of Hutchins, telling BNN writers, "His swing is getting there. We want him to be quick with his swing, short and compact. We want him to be patient and go the other way when he can. Gerald did that to perfection today."

G. Hutchins singled in the 2nd, flied out in the 4th, hit a solo-shot off R. Vázquez in the 7th, singled in the 9th, singled in the 11th and hit a GRAND SLAM off R. Riley in the 12th.

This season Hutchins has hit at a .424 clip with 28 RBIs, 3 home runs and 19 runs scored.
Tuesday, May 19th, 1998: Reid and Burch Suspended for Free-for-All
Yesterday at Wranglers Ballpark a spat between Mark Reid of the South Bend Bad Boys and Owen Burch of the Truckee Chiefs ended with the both benches clearing as players rushed to protect their teammates.

Today, the incident ended with the league suspending both Reid and Burch for 2 games for their fight.

So far this year Reid is batting .349 with 5 home runs, 31 RBIs and 22 runs scored.

Running the numbers on Burch for the year, he has made 17 relief appearances, recorded 9 saves and compiled a 0-4 won-lost mark with a 8.80 ERA. In pitching 15.1 innings, he has totaled 6 strikeouts and 10 walks.
