| Breaking News |  | Sunday, July 6th, 1997: Jarman Torches Gladiators for 5 Hits Truckee center fielder Wilber Jarman banged out 5 hits today, but it was not enough to keep his club from succumbing to the Gladiators 9-8. He went 5-for-6 and raised his batting average to .833 for the season.
Despite the loss, Jarman was not dismayed: "If the hits keep coming," he said, "so will the runs -- and more importantly -- so will the wins."
So far this season Jarman is batting .321 with no home runs, 36 RBIs and 45 runs scored. He has 118 hits in 368 at-bats, 20 walks and a .360 OBP. Jarman has played in 83 games. |  | Monday, June 23rd, 1997: Big Stick Wins HLAA Trophy Alfonso Rodríguez has been in a real groove lately. The 25-year-old Edmonton Gladiators center fielder nabbed Hoboken League Player of the Week honors today after beating up on opposing pitchers all last week.
Rodríguez's hot streak featured 13 hits in 26 at-bats, 2 home runs, 11 RBIs, 6 runs scored and a .500 average.
This season Rodríguez has hit at a .295 clip with 41 RBIs, 5 home runs and 29 runs scored. He has played in 54 games. |  | Saturday, June 21st, 1997: High-5s for Rodríguez! Goes 5-5! It was high-5 day at Immortals Ballpark, at least for Alfonso Rodríguez of the Edmonton Gladiators. He got a lot of high-5's for his outstanding hitting against the Cuernavaca Altepetl, but he and his teammates couldn't pull out a win. Rodríguez smashed 5 hits in 5 at-bats on a his record-setting day, but Edmonton still dropped the game 5-4.
His manager said, "Alfonso was hitting everything. It really was a special game for him. Too bad the other guys couldn't rise to the occasion and get the victory."
In the other dugout the opposing manager told SION beat writers, "Rodríguez bushwhacked my boys today. Obviously we didn't have much success against him, but luckily, we won the ballgame."
A. Rodríguez singled in the 2nd, singled in the 4th, singled in the 6th, hit a solo-shot off A. Varela in the 8th and singled in the 10th.
Rodríguez on the season is hitting .295 with 5 home runs.
